Runway Overrun at Miami: What Happened and Why It Matters

On Sunday afternoon a Prime Air cargo jet, 21 Air Flight 7598, overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport. The Boeing 767-300 had flown from San Juan, Puerto Rico and came off the runway around 2 p.m. local time. The aircraft crossed a perimeter road and struck several vehicles while it slid beyond the runway.

Emergency crews have responded with many units, and firefighters found heavy flames and smoke. More than sixty Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue vehicles were on scene, and some people were removed from cars and taken to hospitals. Five people have died and five others have been injured; three of the injured were reported in critical condition. Some occupants, including pilots, were trapped and technical rescue teams worked to free them. Airport operations were halted and a full ground stop was in effect for hours while the site was secured. Investigators will review flight data and other evidence as they seek to determine the cause.
