Supporters Scammed: The Guo Wengui Fraud Case

When a federal judge in Manhattan imposed a 30-year prison term on Guo Wengui on June 29, 2026, the courtroom heard testimony from victims who said they had lost their life savings. Guo, who used the name Miles Guo and has promoted himself as an opponent of the Chinese Communist Party, was convicted on nine of 12 criminal counts after a seven-week trial. The court ordered the forfeiture of $889 million in restitution and noted that more than 1,000 people had been harmed.

Prosecutors presented evidence that supporters’ investments were channeled into corporate and personal purchases that funded an extravagant lifestyle. Documents and filings cited purchases such as a $37 million yacht, large homes, and a custom Bugatti that prosecutors linked to the schemes. Although defense lawyers argued that Guo was targeted by political foes, the judge said the actions had real financial consequences for trusting investors, and denied a lighter sentence.

Since his arrest in March 2023, Guo has been held without bail, and his legal team has filed appeals and court challenges that continue through the bankruptcy and criminal dockets. The case has drawn attention not only for the size of the fraud but also for Guo’s efforts to cultivate U.S. conservative allies, including political adviser Steve Bannon, which complicated public reaction. Consequently, the sentence was framed as both punitive and restorative, intended to punish wrongdoing and to acknowledge victims' losses.

Before his arrest, Guo kept a high public profile, living in a Central Park penthouse and holding membership at Mar-a-Lago. His public presence helped him attract followers who invested in his projects. The forfeiture order aims to compensate victims and will be handled through court procedures.
