What Happened When Americans Were Quarantined After a Hantavirus Exposure

Health officials have repatriated eighteen Americans who were exposed to a hantavirus while aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. They have been monitored at the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha, and the CDC has coordinated the transfers. The Andes virus, a rare strain that can spread between people in limited cases, has been identified in confirmed tests, while the World Health Organization has judged the global risk to be low. Although some passengers were allowed to leave earlier to self-monitor under local health departments, many remained at the unit so they could receive regular testing.

The 42-day monitoring period ended on June 21, 2026, and all of the Americans have now completed their monitoring. Several regional health centers and federal partners were involved in transport and care, and the quarantine unit provided rooms with internet, exercise equipment, and delivered meals to support mental health. Therefore, the response was organized to reduce risk and to ensure prompt care if symptoms appeared, since hantavirus symptoms can take up to 42 days to appear. Patients were tested at least twice a week, and medical staff were prepared to provide rapid care if needed.
