What Happened When Americans Were Quarantined After a Hantavirus Exposure

An unusual cluster of severe respiratory illness on the cruise ship MV Hondius led to an international response when the Andes virus was identified and three people died. The outbreak was linked to travel in South America, and global health agencies, national public health centers, and specialized quarantine units were mobilized to assess contacts and limit spread. Eighteen Americans who had remained on the ship were repatriated to the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for close medical observation.

The monitoring period lasted 42 days because Andes virus infections have produced symptoms as late as 42 days after exposure, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and WHO advised extended observation. On board the ship officials counted thirteen cases, with several confirmed by laboratory testing. Regional treatment centers and the federal administration coordinated flights and transfers, and patients were offered private rooms with internet, exercise equipment, and meal deliveries to help pass the time.

Some passengers left the unit earlier and were monitored at home by state health departments, while others completed the entire period in Omaha. One passenger remained in custody under a quarantine order that was later described by officials as controversial. The 42-day monitoring period concluded on June 21, 2026, and no sustained spread of the virus has been detected in the United States.

The event underscored how rare but serious hantavirus infections can be, and it tested systems for repatriation, quarantine, and mental health support. Medical teams performed testing at least twice a week and stood ready to provide rapid care if symptoms developed.
