Doctors study whether inflammation causes heart disease. Some medicines lower inflammation but do not always reduce heart events. The CANTOS trial in 2017 showed canakinumab reduced some heart risks. The CIRT trial found low-dose methotrexate did not lower cardiovascular events.

In July 2026 AstraZeneca and Ionis said their drug eplontersen failed a late-stage heart trial for ATTR-CM. The trial did not meet its main goal, called the primary endpoint. Novo Nordisk is testing ziltivekimab, an IL-6 blocker, in the large ZEUS outcomes trial. These results show scientists still test the idea that inflammation causes heart disease.
