What happened at the U.N. meeting on pandemic preparedness?

World leaders met at the United Nations headquarters in New York on 25 September 2026 for a one-day meeting about preparing for future pandemics. Many countries supported a political declaration that would show global commitment to prepare and share tools like vaccines and tests.

However, the United States said: "The United States is not in a position to support this text in full." The European Union also raised concerns about technology transfer and intellectual property that could affect how medicines are shared. The declaration will be brought back to the General Assembly for a vote later in the year. A future vote will decide the next steps.
