Train Strike Near Yahodyn: What Happened and Why It Matters
On September 13, 2026 a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train near Yahodyn station close to the Polish border. The attack occurred shortly after a diplomatic train carrying Boris Johnson and other visitors had left the station. Although the diplomatic train departed early, another train remained at the platform and it carried David Petraeus.
A monitoring team detected the jet-powered drone and an evacuation warning was issued about 15 minutes before impact. Passengers were evacuated and no immediate casualties have been reported. The rail operator regularly adjusts schedules and timetables have been changed to reduce risk, since trains are vulnerable to drone attacks.
Security advisers from several European Union countries and former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt were among the visitors on the diplomatic train, which had been in Kyiv for a security conference. Border guards recorded a nearby strike on a truck, and the Yahodyn crossing was temporarily closed, showing the continuing dangers for people who travel by rail during the conflict. Furthermore rail staff have been trained in rapid evacuation and warning procedures, and emergency teams were deployed. Nevertheless the strike has highlighted the risks of travel by rail in active conflict zones.
