Tensions at the Strait: Talks in Oman and a Damaged Container Ship

On July 11, 2026, Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed that revenge must be carried out after the killing of his father. Earlier the same day a Cyprus-flagged container ship was hit in the Strait of Hormuz and suffered significant engine-room damage; one crew member was reported missing. The United States has conducted strikes on Iranian targets in response, increasing tensions in the region.

While diplomacy has been attempted, Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, travelled to Muscat, Oman, to discuss ways to reopen the strait and protect maritime traffic. Oman and Iran have issued joint statements that emphasise safe passage, and talks have been held on cooperation mechanisms. Although these meetings aim to reduce risk for commercial vessels, military actions have continued and uncertainty remains. Since the Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of global oil shipments, any prolonged disruption could affect trade and fuel markets.
