South Korea's 2026 Local Vote: A First Test of a New Presidency
South Korea held nationwide local elections on June 3, 2026. Voters chose mayors, governors and council members across the country. Many people saw this vote as a test of the new president's first year.
Lee Jae Myung became president on June 4, 2025 after a snap election. The previous president, Yoon Suk Yeol, declared martial law on December 3, 2024 and was later impeached. In February 2026 a court sentenced Yoon to life in prison for leading an insurrection. Many voters said they wanted a stable government and clear leadership. The results were expected to show which party had more support.
