Satellites, Atmosphere, and Space Junk: What the New Filing Means

SpaceX filed for permission to put up to one million satellites in orbit. The company says these will act as orbital data centers to run AI work in space.

These satellites would fly in low Earth orbit (LEO). Scientists warn that Earth warming cools and shrinks the upper atmosphere, so space debris stays in orbit longer and can make collisions more likely.

If many satellites stay in orbit longer, the sky can get crowded and it is harder to avoid accidents. People use Starlink and other satellites for the internet, so safety matters. Scientists and regulators are writing comments to the FCC now.
