Ceasefire Tested: The Strait of Hormuz and the Lebanon Strikes

A two-week ceasefire began on April 8, 2026 between the United States and Iran. The deal said Iran would allow safe ship passage through the Strait of Hormuz while the pause lasted.

Even so, the strait's status was unclear after new strikes in Lebanon. Reports said Iran had closed the waterway again, and fighting in Lebanon continued, testing the truce. Israel said the deal did not include Lebanon. Many ships waited in port and shipping companies said the situation was unclear. People feared more fighting could break the truce. The pause gave brief relief to markets and parts of the region, but the future of the truce was not certain.
