When Earthquake Meets Extreme Heat: Kumamoto 2026

Since a strong earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28, 2026, rescue teams have worked across the damaged area. Teams have searched collapsed buildings and a shopping mall while coping with heat. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued extreme heat alerts, and temperatures in Kumamoto have reached about 36.6 degrees Celsius. Many people are displaced and shelters are crowded, although some shelters have limited air conditioning. Medical staff have been treating cases of dehydration and heat illness at evacuation centers.

Volunteers and local officials have organized water stations and shaded areas, and cooling centers have been set up by the prefecture. The national government has sent additional rescue units and equipment, and local teams are supported by the Self-Defense Forces. Emergency work is being done quickly, but the hot weather has slowed operations and raised concern for older adults and children. Relief supplies have been distributed to evacuation centers, and portable fans and ice have been provided. People have slept in cars or tents when shelters reached capacity.
