Was the American Revolution Truly Radical?
The American Revolution led the thirteen colonies to become the United States in 1776. The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Historians disagree about how big the changes were. Some writers, like Gordon S. Wood, say the Revolution made large social and political changes for many people. Other scholars, such as Bernard Bailyn, say the Revolution began with new political ideas and language about liberty.
In 2026, many libraries and museums are marking 250 years since 1776. The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian have special programs to help people learn more about the Revolution.
