Understanding Histoplasmosis and a Tennessee Cluster

Health authorities in Tennessee identified a rise in a fungal illness called histoplasmosis in parts of Middle Tennessee. The cases were mostly in Spring Hill and Thompson's Station, near the border of Williamson and Maury counties.

People get histoplasmosis when they breathe tiny fungal spores from soil that has bird or bat droppings. Most people have mild symptoms like fever and cough, but some people with weak immune systems can get very sick.

To reduce risk, avoid disturbing old buildings or piles of droppings and use a mask if you must work in dusty soil. Treatment is available; doctors use antifungal medicines such as itraconazole and stronger drugs for severe illness.
