Searching Moon Dust for Tiny Signs of Technology
Some scientists say tiny bits of possible alien technology may sit in the Moon’s dust. Lewis J. Pinault, a researcher at the SETI Institute and Birkbeck College, and colleagues wrote a paper that explains how very small particles could travel through space and land on the Moon. The paper was posted to the preprint server arXiv in June 2026.
The Moon’s surface has fine dust called regolith that keeps a long record of impacts and particles. The researchers say that studying one cubic metre of regolith could help test if past extraterrestrial technology left microscopic pieces on the Moon. They suggest using machine-vision tools and laboratory analysis to find unusual grains. Scientists also must check for Earth-made debris before claiming a find.
