Covering a Big Finance Meeting: Access, Reporting, and Local Response

Finance leaders from the Group of Twenty will meet in Asheville, North Carolina from August 29 to September 1, 2026. The meeting has drawn ministers, central bank governors and business leaders who will discuss global growth and financial risks. While officials aim to focus on economic priorities, the gathering has also attracted public attention and local planning.

In the run-up to the meetings, some reporters were not granted credentials to cover parts of the event. Media credentialing was opened earlier in August and a deadline for applications was set for August 24. The credential process has been managed by the Treasury and some decisions on access have been described as limited. Although credential rules are normal for high-security events, the restrictions have raised questions about transparency and press access.

Local news outlets and community groups have prepared for protests and increased visitor traffic. Journalists who will attend say they plan to report on the discussions and the public response, and residents are watching developments closely. Therefore, coverage of both the meetings and nearby demonstrations is expected to be wide and fast.
