A 26-Year Identification: DNA and a Tent in Olympic National Park
In July 2000 a researcher found human bones inside a sleeping bag in a tent in a remote part of Olympic National Park. The camp was along the Sol Duc River drainage and the remains were taken to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.
On June 10, 2026 the remains were identified as Joseph Louis Serrao Jr. Investigators used DNA testing and forensic genealogy with help from the laboratory Othram. A forensic anthropologist submitted the DNA sample in 2024 and family members later confirmed the match. The case had been unsolved for many years and the identification may bring some closure to the family.
