What Happened to GM’s Electric Vans in Canada?
General Motors has ended production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario. The company announced the decision on October 21, 2025 and said market demand and a changing regulatory environment made the line unsustainable. Production had been suspended since May 2025, and GM has cited the elimination of some U.S. tax credits for electric vehicles as a factor.
Earlier in April, GM reduced shifts and temporarily laid off 1,200 workers to match lower sales, and operations were idled for months. The announcement came less than a week after Stellantis said it would move production of the next-generation Jeep Compass from Brampton, Ontario, to Belvidere, Illinois; this industry shift has raised concern in Canada. Therefore provincial and federal leaders are engaging with the companies and the Unifor union to discuss next steps.
GM said it will assess CAMI for future opportunities while following collective agreement provisions with Unifor and working with government partners.
