Texas and the Ten Commandments: What Happened and Why It Matters

Texas passed a new law called Senate Bill 10. The law requires the Ten Commandments to be on display in every public school classroom starting September 1, 2025.

A federal judge temporarily blocked the rule for 11 school districts. Judge Fred Biery wrote that the displays would likely pressure students and might violate the First Amendment. The law asks for a 16 by 20 inch poster in each room.

Families and groups filed lawsuits in several cities. The Texas attorney general urged schools to follow the law unless a court stops them. The legal fight is ongoing and may go to higher courts.
