Runway Overrun at Miami: What Happened and Why It Matters

Late on Sunday afternoon, a Prime Air Boeing 767-300 freighter operated as 21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sept. 6, 2026, coming to rest well beyond the runway edge and crossing a perimeter road. The aircraft had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and it slid across a nearby service road where it struck multiple vehicles and caught fire, producing heavy smoke that was visible from some distance.

Firefighters and technical rescue teams responded in force, with more than sixty Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue units at the scene; crews found significant flames, extricated occupants from damaged vehicles, and transported the injured to local hospitals. Five people died and five others were injured, several with serious wounds, and some occupants, including members of the flight crew, required specialized rescue efforts. Airport operations were suspended and a full ground stop was imposed while emergency responders secured the area and treated patients.

The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation and investigators will examine flight data, maintenance records and operational procedures as they try to establish what happened. Airport staff and law enforcement have closed nearby roads while wreckage and debris are cleared, and recovery work is expected to continue until the scene is safe for investigators to complete their initial on-site review. The overrun route crossed an access road used by airport-area workers and delivery vehicles, which increased the risk to people on the ground. Investigators have begun collecting evidence at the site and recovery teams are removing wreckage carefully to preserve material for analysis. Any definitive determination about causes will wait for that technical work and formal analysis.
