OpenAI and Broadcom: Building Custom AI Chips

OpenAI will build its own computer chips with help from Broadcom. The companies announced the plan on October 13, 2025. OpenAI said it will design the chips while Broadcom will develop and deploy the hardware.

Deployment is set to start in the second half of 2026 and to reach 10 gigawatts by the end of 2029. OpenAI has also made agreements with Nvidia and AMD to buy specialized chips. The companies did not give financial details. Some analysts questioned the cost of such systems. Broadcom stock rose after the news.
