Leadership and Continuity in Los Angeles Schools
Los Angeles Unified schools have a new leader after the previous superintendent resigned. Alberto Carvalho resigned on June 21, 2026. The FBI had searched his home and district offices earlier this year, and he was on paid leave.
Andrés Chait will remain acting superintendent while the board decides on a permanent leader. Chait is a district veteran who began as a classroom teacher and later worked as a principal and chief of school operations. The district serves more than 500,000 students and Chait said teaching and learning will continue. He has worked with labor leaders to reach contract agreements. Parents and teachers want steady leadership.
