G7 Talks and the Strait: What Happened and What It Means

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited a G7 meeting in France to discuss the Iran war and its effect on shipping. Although most allies were cautious, Rubio argued that the United States can achieve its military and political goals without sending ground troops. He added that the U.S. expects the conflict to end within weeks and not months. While some ministers pressed for stronger cooperation, they agreed to call for attacks on civilians to stop and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran has moved to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s forces have taken steps that make international shipping risky. A counterproposal from Iran has been issued that includes language about sovereignty over the waterway. The G7 said escort missions and international planning could help restore safe passage when conditions allow. The disruption has raised shipping insurance costs and pushed up oil prices. Some planning is already under way.
