From Dubai to Dublin: The Extradition of Daniel Kinahan

Daniel Kinahan was extradited from the United Arab Emirates and arrived in Ireland on August 9, 2026, after being flown on an Irish government aircraft. The transfer followed his arrest in Dubai in April 2026 and a series of legal challenges that ended when he lost a final appeal in July. He has been accused of directing an organised criminal group that operated across several countries. He is 49 years old.

At a hearing held shortly after arrival, Mr Kinahan appeared before the Special Criminal Court and was remanded to Portlaoise Prison, where he will remain in custody. The Special Criminal Court handles organised crime and terrorism cases. Portlaoise is about 90 miles (145 kilometres) southwest of Dublin, and the court set the next appearance for October 5, 2026. The extradition was carried out in accordance with a bilateral agreement between Ireland and the UAE and reflects growing law enforcement cooperation.

Dubai police detained him within 48 hours of the issuance of an Irish arrest warrant. A close associate, Sean McGovern, was extradited from Dubai in May 2025, and the wider investigation has involved evidence from multiple jurisdictions. His case has attracted international attention because the United States offered a five million dollar reward in 2022 connected to the Kinahan organisation, and because other cartel figures were previously detained and transferred from the UAE. Observers have noted that Irish authorities have used military transport for high-profile returns in the past, and that careful security planning accompanied this transfer.

Ireland’s judicial authorities will now prepare the prosecution stage, and court proceedings are expected to unfold over months. The legal process will examine evidence gathered during investigations that involved multiple jurisdictions.
