AI Agents at Work: Tools, Tests, and Trade-offs

AI agents are programs that act for users to complete tasks, run simple workflows, and gather information. Use of agents has grown quickly at work, and many organizations have adopted them for automation, customer service, and code assistance. Surveys have found widespread familiarity with generative AI and rising deployment of agents across industries, while technology firms have shown especially high adoption and business interest. Companies are planning larger AI budgets and are adding agent workflows to daily operations. Some studies have measured employee views, reporting that workers value agents as teammates but still expect clear boundaries and human oversight.

Sentient launched an Arena platform in early 2026 to test and benchmark agents for enterprise use, and investors such as Founders Fund and Pantera were named as backers. The platform is being used to evaluate agent performance and to help firms plan governance, safety, and rollout strategies. While agents can increase speed, firms must manage identity, security, and quality standards so agents operate reliably. Teams have been encouraged to document handoffs and to set repeatable checks before wide deployment and scaling.
