Why the February 2026 Jobs Report Became a Political Story
U.S. job numbers were weaker in February 2026. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls fell by 92,000 and the unemployment rate rose to 4.4%. Wages still rose to $37.32 an hour.
Democrats blamed Donald Trump for the weak report and highlighted tariff effects. Republicans and the Labor Secretary said strikes and bad weather caused many job losses and pointed to other signs of strength. Health care lost jobs in February, and some industries such as manufacturing lost workers too. The report led to more talk about the economy and votes.
