What the Pelacarsen Trial Result Means

Novartis announced on September 4, 2026 that pelacarsen failed in a large Phase III Lp(a)HORIZON trial. Doctors had hoped the drug would lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Pelacarsen is an experimental drug that lowers lipoprotein(a), called Lp(a).

The trial included 8,323 patients with high Lp(a). Pelacarsen lowered Lp(a) levels, but it did not reduce major heart problems compared with placebo. About one in five people have high Lp(a). The companies said they will present the full results at a medical congress. Patients were already on other heart medicines. Researchers study the data.
