Tensions in the Gulf: What Happened near the Strait of Hormuz

On June 28, 2026, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said it fired drones and missiles at U.S. facilities in Bahrain and at the Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait. The Fifth Fleet is the U.S. Navy command in Bahrain and it was named by local authorities.

Local officials said air defences intercepted many of the missiles and drones, and there were no major casualties or damage. The U.S. military then struck several Iranian sites near the Strait of Hormuz. The events came during days of fighting over shipping in the strait. Diplomats planned meetings to try to reduce the violence.
