Tariffs and Talks: What Happened Between the U.S. and Canada

Trade talks between the United States and Canada have collapsed, and 50 percent tariffs on many Canadian goods took effect on August 22, 2026. The duties apply to roughly $20 billion of Canadian exports and were put in place after days of negotiations while both sides sought a compromise.

Jamieson Greer, the United States Trade Representative, said the U.S. had offered to cut tariffs on steel, autos and lumber, but Canada refused those terms. Dominic LeBlanc met with Greer in Washington this week, and Prime Minister Mark Carney then suspended negotiations. Canada has promised to retaliate and match U.S. measures dollar for dollar, and many industry groups say the dispute could hurt workers and supply chains. Although both governments said talks were constructive at times, no further meetings are scheduled now. Businesses and farmers are worried because prices may rise. Since Canada and the U.S. trade closely, supply chains could slow down and companies may change plans. Therefore governments must consider ways to protect workers while they negotiate. Some economists warn that even short disputes can cut growth and raise costs for consumers.
