Talks and Tension: Israel, Lebanon and a Strained Cease-Fire

Israel has agreed to begin direct talks with Lebanon. Benjamin Netanyahu said he instructed his cabinet to start negotiations as soon as possible. The talks would focus on disarming Hezbollah and reducing border violence. Some officials said the talks could begin next week in Washington. Israel said it will keep striking until security is restored in northern Israel.

At the same time, Israel kept striking Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Iran said Lebanon was covered by the cease-fire, but the United States and Israel said it was not. The fighting risks breaking the new truce and hurting civilians. Hospitals and rescuers faced many wounded people.
