Strikes and Safety: What Happened Near Iran’s Bushehr Plant

U.S. Central Command has continued nightly strikes on Iranian military targets, and by late July these operations had stretched into a twelfth consecutive day. CENTCOM framed the campaign as a focused effort to reduce Tehran's capacity to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels that transit the Strait of Hormuz, while U.S. aircraft, ships and long-range missiles were employed to strike command centers, air defenses and maritime capabilities.

President Donald Trump's public warnings that the United States will destroy one bridge or one power plant each time Iran fires on a ship have raised concern among military planners and diplomats, because such targeting could place vital infrastructure at risk. Although strikes are described as aimed at military capabilities, the line between military and civilian infrastructure has blurred in several recent attacks, which complicates legal and humanitarian assessments.

In Bushehr province, home to Iran's only operating civilian nuclear reactor, satellite imagery analysts have identified what they say are impact marks and internal damage at sites inside the plant complex; local officials then emphasized that the reactor unit itself remained in operation and that no casualties were reported. The IAEA has warned that any attack near a nuclear facility carries real risks to nuclear safety and has previously logged a projectile impact near Bushehr that did not reach the reactor.

Consequently, the situation has intensified worries about shipping, regional trade and civilian services, and independent verification of strike effects remains difficult because reporting is uneven across sources and some claims are contested. If international monitors are denied clear access, assessments of damage and safety will continue to depend on satellite imagery and official statements.
