Classroom Speech at West Point: A Court Stops Restrictions
A federal judge blocked West Point from enforcing a new speech policy. The judge issued a preliminary injunction on May 26, 2026. The policy required faculty to get approval before speaking publicly and barred professors from sharing personal opinions in class.
Tim Bakken, a civilian law professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, filed the lawsuit. The judge said the government offered no real justification for limiting a professor's ability to express opinions in a Military Academy classroom. West Point said it will work with the Justice Department on next steps. His lawyers praised the ruling as a victory for classroom discussion.
