This year, many maintenance projects in national parks were delayed. Park officials moved scheduled projects to a 'low priority' list so workers could focus on projects in Washington, D.C. The work in D.C. is for the nation’s 250th birthday events.

Money from park entry fees was moved to pay for those D.C. projects and for big repairs near the capital. The National Park Service still cares for parks across the country, but staff said some local projects had less money and were put off. Parks have a large deferred maintenance backlog that needs money and workers. Some parks have fewer staff than before.
