States Open a Legal Probe into OpenAI
A coalition of U.S. state attorneys general opened an investigation into OpenAI. On June 12, 2026 they served a subpoena that asked for documents about advertising, how the company keeps users, and how it handles consumer and health data.
The subpoena also looked at activities involving minors and older adults, the design of its deep learning models, and company policies. OpenAI said, "We take the concerns raised by state attorneys general seriously." The state of Florida had already filed a lawsuit on June 1, 2026 claiming ChatGPT harmed children. OpenAI said it will cooperate and that it has protections for young users and tools to guide parents.
