He also developed a practical grading system for ring avulsion injuries, now commonly called the Urbaniak classification. Although microsurgery had earlier pioneers, his work at Duke helped spread these methods widely in orthopaedic and plastic surgery.","He trained 328 residents, 124 hand fellows, and 81 international research fellows from many countries, and many of his trainees became leaders in hand surgery. While some replantation cases remain difficult, his clinical programs and teaching have enabled surgeons to save and restore many injured fingers.
